He flew back to RI to finish up some business and to visit the doctor to see what the lump was on the side of his neck. He flew back to NC to break the news to his family that he had been diagnosed with stage four throat cancer.

In the fall of 2013 Ellen wasn’t feeling well and went to her doctor for a check-up. Based on her symptoms he believed she had the onset of ALS. After several months of testing and the progression of the symptoms, the diognosis of ALS was confirmed in April of 2014. Since then, the disease has moved aggressively. Her middle daughter Megan was engaged and planned to wed in the Spring of 2015, but the wedding was moved up to October of last year based on Ellens rapidly deteriorating condition. Ellen made the wedding, but, by then was in a wheelchair having lost the use of all limbs. She is currently being fed through a feeding tube and is a quadriplegic. Chip has not worked since her diagnosis. He is her caregiver.
